Dr Bahareh Dibadin moved to Australia 9 years ago from Iran to support her husband’s postgraduate studies. Bahareh has a PhD in Palaeontology, and in Iran worked as a university lecturer, and as a teacher in high schools.
Bahareh’s migration experience was hugely complex, she was very happy to support her husband’s study and career ambitions, and to experience living in a new country; simultaneously it was very lonely and isolating for her to leave behind her family, friends and meaningful work in Iran.
Community saved her.
Living in the Kelvin Grove precinct, Bahareh began to frequent the Exchange Hub run by Communify, and found friendship, English-language support, cultural and social experience, plus a chance to volunteer and build a pathway back into employment because her extensive skills and experience was not recognised in Australia. She also gained confidence and had a community of support and guidance when she had her daughter seven years ago, and in the subsequent years raising her.
All of this also led Bahareh to apply for a position as a Hub Leader with Community Hubs Australia, a role she excelled in. She has now held leadership positions with three hubs, developing an excellent reputation for her ability to set up new hubs, create interesting and impactful programming, and build a strong sense of community.
